Abstract

Social cognition is related to the ability to recognize and infer the emotions, thoughts and beliefs of the other and has a primordial function in social interaction. The construct of empathy has aspects that overlap with those of social cognition. Empathy is a multidimensional process, which leads to the attempt to understand the perspective of the other, being composed of the cognitive and affective domain. Furthermore, empathy is an important element in the relationship of the health professional with the patient, because it leads to a more humanistic care and of higher quality. The burden is a factor that may be related to care and that brings direct consequences for the health professional and the quality of care provided. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between empathy, social cognition and burden between healthcare professionals who work in the homes for the aged. The design of the study is cross-sectional. The following instruments will be used: Multidimensional Scale of Interpersonal Reactivity, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Reading the mind in the eyes test and a Facial Emotion recognition task. We will invite to participate in the study all the health professionals who work in homes for the aged in the city of Americana - SP. (AU)
