Abstract

The objective of the project is to analyze institutional responses to the Zika Virus and Microcephaly epidemic in Brazil from 2014. Since the first Zika cases reported by doctors in the Northeast region of Brazil, in line with the confirmation that the disease was linked to the growing number of infants born with Microcephaly, Zika (and the Microcephaly associated with it) has become a national problem that is fraught with sanitary, scientific and ethical issues. In this sense, there were numerous institutional responses from state organs, research centers, NGOs and scientific groups on the need to combat the disease, as well as the choice of the best method. Thus, by analyzing the official documents produced by state health agencies, the intellectual production on the subject and interviews with doctors, scientists and other health professionals involved with the disease, this project intends to understand the processes of production of scientific knowledge and sanitary policies on Zika and its political effects produced in society. The hypothesis to be developed is that such responses are marked by gender and by conceptions of masculinities and femininities. (AU)
