Abstract

Acute otitis media (AOM) is a common childhood disorder with a significant morbidity rate and is considered a major cause of antibiotic therapy in primary health care. The main bacterial etiological agents are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis. The in-depth knowledge of the etiology and pathogenesis of otitis media are of great relevance in the medical field, since they may contribute to the development of new treatments and to the reduction of cases. In this context, this work aims to evaluate the epidemiological, microbiological and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Acute Otitis Media isolates in children from Presidente Prudente - SP. Children aged 0-12 years with a diagnosis of AOM will be selected for the study. A demographic and clinical data will be collected from the patient with related data, for example with pneumococcal vaccination status, medical history, history of care and general symptoms. The middle ear fluid samples will be collected by tympanocenesis and then sent to the microbiology laboratory to identify the etiological agent by conventional culture method and multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Isolates will also be evaluated for antimicrobial susceptibility. The results will be considered significant at a significance level of 5% (p <0.05), giving them a 95% confidence that the results were correct.
