Vegetable repertoire in the catalogs of plants at the beginning of the 20th century: the catalogs of the firms Estabelecimento Floricultura and Dierberger & Cia. (1924 to 1928)

Abstract

The Estabelecimento Floricultura, founded in 1893 by the German Johann Dierberger (1859-1931), was one of the pioneer firms in the city of São Paulo for the production and trade of plants, and the design and execution of gardens. These activities, including the list of plants produced and marketed by the firm, were disseminated through its catalogs, constituting a rich material for understanding the vegetable repertoire produced and distributed. In this context, the objective of this research is to analyze the structure of the catalogs, their organization and content. The focus is on the study and comparison of the vegetal repertoire referring to the catalogs after the entry of the sons João Dierberger Jr. and Reynaldo Dierberger in the firm (1922), until the year in which the company is renamed Dierberger & Cia. (1927). The specific objective is to give continuity to the "Cataloging Essays", adopted as a methodological strategy in previous research, originally inserted in the FAPESP Thematic Project titled "Erudite and technical knowledge in the configuration and reconfiguration of the urban space. State of São Paulo, 19th and 20th centuries" (Process number 05 / 55338-0). Among these essays, the species distributed by the São Paulo government from 1909 to 1912 was cataloged through the "Serviço de Distribuição de Mudas e Sementes" (SDMS), making it possible to establish a comparative universe between these species and those marketed by firms Estabelecimento Floricultura and Dierberger & Cia. at the beginning of the 20th century.
