Semiotics and short films in the development of reading skills in high school

Abstract

The present work aims to use the Greimasian semiotics in the teaching/learning of the Portuguese language, in a proposal to increase the reading and oral and written skills of the High School students. We have the short film Dimensions of Dialogue (1982), directed by Jan Švankmajer as a corpus, and we are going to accomplish an analysis of it, with the objective of putting the student in contact with the syncretic text, in order to motivate him, to collaborate in the change of relations with verbal and visual texts and also to contribute to future pedagogical actions related to the teaching of native language. In order to verify the acquisition of semiotic instruments and the development of student's reading skills, reading and text production exercises are going to be elaborated base on the analysis of the short film, which will be available in a blog. In this blog, it will also have an introduction to the topic addressed to teachers. Knowing the complexity of the semiotic theory, we opted for an adaptation of the basics concepts, referring to the three levels of the generative path of meaning, and the notion of semissimbolism, with the purpose of providing young people an efficient instrument and adapted to the needs of the teaching of Portuguese in school.
