Fictional discourses of slavery: non-canonical literature in the crisis of slavery (Brazil, 1868-1888)

Abstract

The objectives of the present scientific initiation research are to identify and catalog non-canonical fictional works that are related to slavery between 1868 and 1888. A total of 19 periodicals published in Rio de Janeiro will be used as documentary corpus ranging from ephemeral journals to journals that cover the entirety of the 20 year period studied as Jornal do Commercio. The influence of the press on slavery and the political atmosphere is an element of great importance and already studied by historiography. This research seeks to treat fictional works published in the press as fictional discourses, to the point of verifying their influence in the crisis of Brazilian slavery. It will be identified in these texts the literary genre and political position of the periodical in which it was published. Then, they will be quantified and periodized, investigating the relation of the increase or decrease of the works with the political conjuncture of the analyzed period.
