Abstract

This research project intends to study the work of the portuguese architect João Mendes Ribeiro (Coimbra, 1960), based on the relationships between architecture and scenography, seeking to recognize traces that persist in the two modes of actuation, that is, the intersection of these disciplines and their possible matches. It aims to recognize the production of architecture and scenography and and stick to some work, in which architectural and scenographic elements approach in the way of delineating new landscapes and spaces. It does this initially through the following works: Scenography of the piece "A visitação" (1995), Visual Arts Center (1997-2003), scenography / furniture "OR Mala-mesa" (1998) and House Robalo Cordeiro (2009) ). The analysis is attentive to the repercussion of the architectural action in the scenographic works and in the influence of the reasoning employed in the scenography on the materiality of the architecture project. In this context, the research seeks to understand the theoretical, methodological and technical resources that enabled the relationship and reciprocal influences between these two fields - architecture and scenography. Based on the study of these projects and the literature that dealing with the concepts of interdisciplinarity, such as Rosalind Krauss's concept of "extended field" (1998) and its influence on architecture, analyzed by Anthony Vidler (2001), the observance of disciplinary limits of Bernard Tschumi (1981), the intersection between architecture and art by Hal Foster (2015) and attention to the inseparability between human and material landscapes in the distinction between space and place (SANTOS, 2008).
