Abstract

Solanaceae family is one of the most important in agriculture because it contains economically expressive crops in Brazil and in the world as tomato, eggplant, peppers, and sweet-pepper. They are affected by viruses transmitted by whiteflies, Bemisiatabaci. In Brazil the invasives species of whiteflies, MEAM1 - Biotype B and Mediterranean (MED) - Biotype Q were reported, the last one recently detected inBrazil. B. tabaci MED is particularly well adapted to pepper, therefore one of the objectives is to verify the dynamics of this insect in this culture, the occurrence of viruses associated to the insect, and to evaluate the performance of MED species in sweet-pepper genotypes. Commercial genotypes and Capsicum spp. materials from Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC), previously selected as resistant to theMEAM1 species, will be tested for the performance and development of B. tabaciMediterranean. The knowledge obtained in this project is important for better understanding the begomovirus x Solanaceae x whitefly pathosystem and the establishment of control strategies to the disease and insect in the field. The use of resistant genotypes of sweet-pepper can be very helpful in the integrated management of the pest and disease.
