Abstract

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by repetitive and restricted behaviors and deficits in communication and in social interaction, leading to deficits in other areas, such as literacy. However, studies that have used distinctly Technology, Gamification and Discrete Trial Training (DTT) have presented promising results in supporting the literacy development of children with autism. We have conducted a systematic literature review and identified a lack of empirical evidence and studies regarding the literacy level that takes advantage of these three elements. To target this gap, we propose in the Master's Project an approach that relates Technology, Gamification and DTT. In the internship program, we aim to apply accessibility and usability techniques in our approach and to verify the impact on the behaviors, concentration, and engagement of children with autism in the literacy context.
