Abstract

The INCONEL 718 nickel superalloy has great employability in the petrochemical and aerospace industries, where high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality of pieces are required. In this sense, external cylindrical grinding is a process of abrasion machining that achieves these results in the pieces produced and is the most used by the means of production today. Given the use of geometry tool not defined by the grinding, the dissipation of energy in the form of heat is high, which can compromise the integrity of the piece. In this way, the industry adopts conventional cutting fluids, which on the one hand reduce the effects of increasing the temperature in the cutting zone, but on the other, cause damage to the machine operator's health and to the environment, if discarded incorrectly. Thus, industry and scientific research have sought alternatives to cutting fluids, with the minimum amount of lubricant (MQL) and the use of liquid nitrogen as the refrigerant being the most promising method. Cryogenic grinding eases the problems of increasing the temperature in the cutting zone, due to the high thermal conductivity of the liquid nitrogen and does not cause damage to the health of the operator and the environment. This work will evaluate the performance of liquid nitrogen as a cutting fluid in the external cylindrical grinding, comparing this technique to MQL and conventional cooling. For this, the input parameters in the experiments will be varied and the results of the output parameters will be analyzed, which are: arithmetic average roughness (Ra), circularity deviation, diametrical grinding wheel wear, acoustic emission, Vickers microhardness, microscopy optics, power and tangential shear force. With this work, we seek to increase knowledge in the area of grinding mainly. Thus, the expansion of science and the advancement in solving societal problems described in this paper are the guides to realizing it.
