Abstract Digital social networks enable the communicational dynamism, establishing itself as a new place of production and reception of information and generation of knowledge. In this scenario, it's perceived that online communication gave rise to new perspectives for the performance of contemporary social movements and for the political and social articulation of citizens. The purpose of this study is to reflect on the historical course of the democratization of communication and to estimate the potential of online communication, especially on Facebook, Intervozes and FNDC. Specifically, it's hoped to: Understand the discussions about the historical processes of the democratization of communication, especially in Brazil; Describe and characterize communication strategies in Intervozes and FNDC fanpages as movements for the democratization of communication; Analyze the content produced by these movements in Facebook posts and how much this relates to the issue of democratization of communication; and verify, in the light of Intervozes and FNDC work on Facebook, the role of online communication at the service of citizenship. The objectives will be achieved through qualitative-quantitative research, based on exploratory, analytical and descriptive research. The data on the fanpages of social movements will be collected during the second quarter of 2019 and also described and interpreted qualitatively through Content Analysis. It's hoped, therefore, that this study contributes to the reflections that involve the theme of social movements and communication and demarcates the importance of this reflection in the social question around the movements for the democratization of communication.
