Abstract The interest for natural photosensitizers has increased in the past years due to its ease to adhere or pass through cytoplasmic membrane and due to its potential in production reactive oxygen species. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro potential of essential oils and plant extracts to be used in photodynamic therapy as monotherapy on Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Cutibacterium acnes. First, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy will be carried out using the microorganisms in suspension at sub-inhibitory concentration of the plant material. Four treatment groups will be studied: negative control, plant material, light and photodynamic therapy (light + plant material). The plant material with the best results will be tested using the microorganisms in biofilms. The efficacy of the therapy will be evaluated by viable cell counting after the treatment. The evaluation of the production of reactive oxygen species and the evaluation of cytotoxicity will be performed in plant materials that present the best antimicrobial activity.Data will be analyzed with GraphPad Prism versão 3.02 at 5% significance.
