Abstract

At present, lot of people are subject to cases of deformities in the face, being they carriers of acquired deformities like infectious processes, surgeries, radiotherapies and traumatic accidents; or congenital deformities carriers. Most of these lesions generate deformities in cutaneous and skeletal tissues. Autologous tissue grafts (such as adipose and bone) or alloplastic materials (such as silicone and acrylic) are used to treat these conditions. Fat tissue grafts have as a positive point the fact that they are autologous and do not trigger an inflammatory reaction, but require local anesthesia in the donor and recipient area, they have an unpredictable absorption; and, in most cases, require other subsequent procedures. While the alloplastic materials, for example, silicon, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and acrylic, have very relevant positives points such as: do not need to approach the donor area, reduction of the procedure time since it does not require withdrawal, be in unlimited quantity and possibility of being adapted for each patient during manufacturing. In this context, the surgeon is divided between autologous and alloplastic implants. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the inflammatory response caused by the use of silicone and PTFE tapes in rabbits with the aim to understand more about these materials.
