Abstract

The strategies of colonization and exploitation of Portugal in Africa in the late 1800's and early 1990's were circumscribed within the humanitarian and ethical rhetoric of the Civilizing Mission, from which it was disseminated and justified, at the time, the superiority of the European white compared to the Black African, being the duty of the settlers the elevation of the natives to the civilization, having as main instrument, the education by the work. Thus, the legislative production elaborated by Portugal in the second half of the Nineteenth century and beginning of the Twentieth century, loaded with civilized and strongly racialized rhetoric, legitimized various forms of forced labor in colonial territories, generating African resistances, riots in Luanda and Benguela, and international denunciations regarding this kind of control of labor. The research aims to analyze the clashes and resistances within the Portuguese colonial system, in addition to making possible the understanding of the consequences of such actions within the legislative field, thus understanding the extent to which these pressures caused conflicts in the Portuguese domain regarding the labor exploitation of native africans in Angola.
