Abstract

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) will allow a variety of scientific studies by observing an area of 8000 square degrees of the southern sky in 12 optical broad, medium and narrow bands. In this project, the student will determine the stellar populations of galaxies in the Hydra cluster, a work intended to demonstrate the IFU-like capability of the S-PLUS survey. The data are all in hands, reduced and calibrated, and the methods were already developed in our group. A possible extension of the work is to use IFU spectroscopy from archives to investigate several well-known problems in the study of stellar population abundances, such as (1) testing of different methods such as absorption-line strengths versus full spectral fitting; (2) investigate how to handle correlated variables; (3) investigate methods to avoid binning of the data in the IFU cubes; (4) ensure a robust treatment of emission lines and missing data points or outliers. One other possible extension is the study of star-formation rates in low-surface brightness galaxies found in the Hydra cluster. (AU)
