Evaluation of direct, indirect and associated restorative techniques in the marginal sealing of non-carious cervical lesions

Abstract

This in vitro study aims to evaluate the marginal sealing of the tooth-restoration interface in different techniques and restorative materials used to treat non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Class V cavities will be prepared on the buccal surface of 80 bovine incisors, which will be divided randomly into 8 groups (G1 to G8), (10 teeth in each group). Groups G1 to G4 will be the control groups, without erosive and abrasive cycling, and groups G5 to G8 will undergo erosive and abrasive cycling prior to the restorations. The G1 and G5 groups will be restored with Filtek Z350 XT composite resin (3m espe), by the direct technique. The G2 and G6 groups will be restored with Filtek One Bulk-Fill composite resin (3m espe), by the direct technique. The G3 and G7 groups will be restored with Filtek Z350 XT composite resin (3m espe) by the direct-indirect technique. And the G4 and G8 groups will be restored with lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramics (Emax, Ivoclar Vivadent) by the indirect technique. After restorations, all teeth will undergo thermal cycling. The analysis of the restorations will be based with some of the criteria present in the FDI World Dental Federation criteria for clinical evaluation of restorations. Then, the restorations will be immersed in ammonical silver nitrate solution for 24 hours in dark environment and immersed in photo-developing solution under fluorescent light for 8 hours. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure the penetration of the tracer solution in µm, microleakage measured in scores (0-3) and scanning electron microscopy tests will be performed with the aim of evaluating the tooth-restoration interface. The results obtained will be analyzed by non-parametric statistical analysis using the Kruskall-Wallis test with significance of 0,5% for the microleakage test and two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test with significance of 5% for the penetration analyses.
