Abstract

My project's objective is to investigate how asylum seekers and refugees represent, use and handle their experience in welcoming and reception centers in Italy to reorganize their trajectories once they leave the asylum system, focusing in particular on the effects of the process of mediation, in both its formal and informal features. Through a multi-sited ethnography that will take place in Italy and the Gambia, the research seeks to describe how living in reception centers transforms subjectivities and migratory goals, and how such transformations are narrated and discursively performed. The research goal of my ethnography is to explore a specific case, the one of Gambian asylum seekers, and investigate their discursive repertoires and practices to locate and signify their presence in Europe in the aftermath of their period in the asylum system, attempting to use such ethnographic case to look at how asylum technologies affect the transnational migratory landscape.
