Abstract

Nanotechnology is a powerful tool that is impacting all fields and has great potential for application in the medical field, especially in the treatment of diseases suchas Cancer. In this context, nanobiomaterials, nanomaterials conjugated to biomolecules, are being developed aiming the diagnosis and treatment of Cancer. Such nanobiomaterials must present colloidal stability in different biological systems, low toxicity against healthy cells and tissues, high selectivity towards the therapeutic target ssuch as tumors, thus minimizing eventual undesirable adverse effects. The Group is systematically developing the surface chemistry for multifunctionalization of nanoparticles and nanobiomaterials for application as MRI and PET contrast agents recently developed. However, some parameters must still must be adjusted to make them suitable for clinical use. Hence, the present PhD project is focused in the development of novel nanobiomaterials based on ultra small 3 nm diameter nanoparticles for Cancer diagnosis by imaging techniques such MRI and PET/SPECT, and eventually therapy (acting as antitumor drug carriers), thus realizing useful theranostic nanoagents.
