Abstract

The understanding of adolescence must go beyond universalizing and crystallized conceptions, related to the historical moment, the culture and the adolescents ‘life history. In contemporary western adolescence, a phenomenon that has been recurring and received increasing attention is self-injury. Self-injury can be defined as a deliberate injury that results in the direct destruction or alteration of the body tissue of the perpetrator, with or without the intent of suicide. Considering the great demand for care and attention to self-injury, as well as the gaps in the scientific literature, the aim of the present study is to identify and analyze the adolescents´ conceptions of self-injury between those who self-injured them self. The theoretical reference used will be Winnicott's psychoanalytic theory. It is a qualitative research, with data collection performed through individual interviews using the Draw-Story with Theme. The target population that will participate in the meetings are adolescents who self-injured, from a school in the municipality of São Carlos-SP. Data analysis will be based on thematic analysis. It is understood that the approximation of the self-injury conceptions by self-injured adolescents can highlight ways for future interventions, besides contributing to the understanding of the phenomenon itself.
