Abstract

Insulin resistance is one of the hallmark features of type-2 diabetes mellitus and is commonly triggered by overweight. However, a considerable proportion of the type 2 diabetic patients is lean, a condition reproduced in Goto-Kakizaki rat developed in Japan. Musculoskeletal disorders are often reported in diabetic patients, which greatly compromises their quality of life. These diseases are associated with an imbalance between synthesis and degradation of proteins. In the present study, the Long Digital Extensor (EDL) and soleus muscles will be evaluated in the periods of 7 and 30 days after the induction of hypertrophy through synergistic ablation surgery of the anterior tibial muscle and the tenotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle, respectively. The aim of the present study is to determine the mechanisms of protein synthesis and degradation in the condition of type 2 diabetes. In previous studies our group reported that in type 1 diabetic mice the hypertrophy of the EDL and soleus muscles occurs in the same magnitude as in the control group. However, the signaling pathways regulate skeletal muscle mass and hypertrophy still need to be clarified in type 2 diabetes.
