Abstract

In my doctoral research, currently in progress, my object of study are the collective conceptions of gender in conjunction with race held by 9th graders in middle school. I intend to analyze if such collective conceptions influence the school engagement of boys and girls and the way students negotiate, re-signify or confront the notions prevailing in their peer groups. To this end, an ethnographic research was conducted from March through December 2018, in a public local school located in the neighborhood of Butantã, which is the most socially unequal administration area in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The analysis of the empirical materials obtained in 2018 is underway, drawing from an attempt to build an intersectional analytical framework. The proposal for a Research Internship Abroad presented here seeks to establish a parthnership with a researcher who is experienced in studies dealing with intersectionality, gender, race, and class with the purpose of further developing my theoretical knowledge and consolidate analyses capable of highlighting the intertwining of different social relations that condition the school trajectories of boys and girls, black and white.
