Abstract

This project aims to explore and to describe sediment use patterns for the construction of the ceriantharian tube as well as the behavior involved in it, using the species Ceria the omorphe brasiliensis as a model. Studies focusing on the peculiarities inherent to the Ceriantharia tube are scarce, and usually focused on the importance of mucus production and the release of pticocysts in their composition and building. However, the behavioral aspect and the different substrates used for the construction of tubes, as well as its structural influence are unknown. In this study, 4 specimens of C. brasiliensis will be individualized in aquaria with different substrates and the construction of their tubes will be analyzed through time-lapse filming. With the obtained results, it is expected the gathering of information about the tube building behavior in Ceriantharia and the assessment of possible restrictions and impacts caused by the use of uncommon substrates in the tube construction process, thus contributing with the acquisition of new information on these subjects and filling gaps in need of clarification.
