Abstract Previous literature has found that the perception of procedural justice plays a pivotal role on the legitimacy of institutions. However, legitimacy is also affected by other variables coming from the contexts and individuals experiences' of institutionality. Particularly, the legitimacy of authorities also depends on a broader network of institutions where the people navigate through. The aim of this proposal is to test how experiences of vulnerability (e.g., economic inequality, social exclusion, mistreatment, etc.) undermine the association between procedural justice and legitimacy of institutions. To test this idea, I will use survey data gathered by the Núcelo de Estudos da Violencia coming from the "Building Democracy Daily" and conduct a two-fold analytical approach. First, I will use multilevel and structural equation modelling to test the effect of contextual variables on individuals' responses, and to test the changes across time in individual responses. Second, I will combine qualitative and quantitative techniques to account for open-ended responses of people reasoning to obey the law by groups of people across time. (AU) | |
