Abstract

The word variation, that is, the use of different denominations for the same concept, is a phenomenon widely accepted by the modern theories of Terminology (GAUDIN, 1993; CABRÉ, 1999; TEMMERMAN, 2000; FABER ET AL, 2006). From a descriptive point of view, which seeks to understand the role of terminology in the representation and communication of specialized knowledge, these theories recognize that variation is an inherent phenomenon of specialized communication, since, as Tercedor (2011: 182) states, it is a reflection of the dynamic processes of categorization and structuring of specialized knowledge and, thus, can manifest itself in any field of knowledge. Considering that, this research has as main objective to analyze the phenomenon of the denominational variation in the scope of the Economy, realizing a contrastive study between the terms used, in this field, in Brazil and in Spain. With this study we intend to verify how the variation in this area of knowledge is processed: the conceptual information present in the selected variants and the possible causes or factors that justify this variation, both in the Brazilian Portuguese and in the Spanish language variations. For this, we will use a Portuguese-Spanish comparative bilingual corpus, made up of two specialized newspapers in the area of Economics, published in Brazil and Spain, in a timeframe cut from 2007 to 2018. We hope that the result obtained will allow us to highlight the importance and the role of the word variation for the understanding of the concepts used in this field, as well as being a starting point for the emergence of new studies of variation, either from a functional or cognitive point of view.
