Effects of ozonated sunflower-seed oil on the equine wound limb repair

Abstract

The present study aims at evaluating the healing effect of ozonated oil on horse's limbs, in face of the challenge of the predisposition of this region to form exuberant granulation tissue. Three cutaneous wounds will be induced in the left and right metacarpal equines, and three treatments will be compared: ozonized sunflower oil, sunflower oil, and saline solution. For this purpose, six adult equine, without defined race, from the equine creation of FMVZ - UNESP Botucatu, will be used. The health of the animals will be evaluated by physical examination and blood tests. Prior to the experimental phase, the animals will be medicated with oral ivermectin and deltamethrin by spraying. For the induction of wounds, the horse will be contained in the trunk, sedated and anesthetized with appropriate anesthetic protocol. The region of the limbs to be incised will undergo rigorous tricotomy and antisepsis. For each lesion, incisions of square shape will be made, with scalpel, measuring 17 mm x 17 mm. All wounds, regardless of treatment, will be washed with 0.9% NaCl and protected by a bandage. In the postoperative period, antittanic serum and flunixin meglumine will be administered for analgesia. The treatments will be repeated daily, until the complete healing of the lesions, as well as the physical examination and the macroscopic evaluation of the lesions healing evolution. The left and right thoracic limbs will be biopsied at different times. The biopsies will be made with the same anesthetic protocol defined for wound induction surgery. Samples will be sent to a laboratory with histopathology service and the formation of fibrosis, collagen organization, epithelial hyperplasia, angiogenesis and inflammation will be observed.
