Evaluation of food consumption and energy expenditure of HIV seropositive patients with increased cardiovascular risk

Abstract

The emergence and advances in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) have promoted increased survival and quality of life for HIV-positive patients. However, its adverse effects include redistribution of fat and metabolic changes (lipodystrophy syndrome). These factors, added to the chronic inflammation by the virus, contribute to the formation of an atherogenic metabolic profile in these patients, raising the risks for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The energy expenditure in these patients was also another altered condition, raising the question of whether the lipodystrophy syndrome could be an independent factor for the increase of REE in this group. Thus, the objectives of the present study are to estimate the energy expenditure and to compare it with the habitual food consumption of HIV seropositive patients with the lipodystrophy syndrome. For this, the equations of Melchior et al. and a 24-hour dietary recall will be used, so that it is checked if food intake reaches the energy and macronutrient recommendations. Sixty HIV seropositive patients on HAART use will be evaluated, who will also have their nutritional status evaluated by means of anthropometric methods (weight, stature and body mass index) and body composition by electric bioimpedance, in addition to the distribution of body fat evaluated by means of anthropometric measures (waist circumference, waist-hip ratio and waist-thigh ratio).
