Abstract

Sapindales is one of the main orders of Malvids, known for having families of great economic importance, such as Anacardiaceae and Rutaceae. The species of Sapindales are widely distributed, occupying the most diverse types of environments. Among the families of the order there is a wide floral morphological diversity and little is known about the development and floral evolution of Sapindales. This project, therefore, aims to fill some gaps in relation to these issues and is divided into two major parts: (I) the first one aims to study the structure and floral development in Biebersteinia (Biebersteiniaceae), a genus that was recently revealed as family-sister to all other members of Sapindales, and therefore crucial to rebuild the flowers of the common ancestor of the order; (II) the second part aims to unite the morphological and molecular studies available to representatives of Sapindales, in order to carry out macroevolutionary studies. Therefore, it is intended to perform morphological reconstructions in phylogenies to study the evolution of the gynoecium and androecium in Sapindales families, as well as to understand the role that these morphological variations have in the diversification of large families, such as Anacardiaceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae and Sapindaceae.
