Abstract The body image is a dynamic and multidimensional phenomenon built from several aspects related to the individual's experience, cognition, and emotions. Cognitions represent the thoughts and beliefs about the body image and may be assessed by the attention to body shape. Emotions may generate feelings of inadequacy related to the body image that can trigger fear, discomfort, and anxiety. Aim: i. to present the Portuguese version of the Attention to Body Shape Scale (ABS) adapted to the Brazilian context, ii. to estimate the psychometric properties of the ABS and the Social Physical Anxiety Scale (SPAS) applied to adult individuals, iii. to estimate the influence of demographic characteristics and of the body mass index on social physical anxiety and on the attention to body shape of adult individuals. iv. to estimate the correlation between different components of body composition and scores of attention to body shape and social physical anxiety. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using non-probabilistic sampling. The minimum sample size was estimated in two steps. To address the objective iii, the sample should be 363 participants of each sex. To address the objective iv, 60 participants of each sex will be needed. Young adults (18 to 40 years old) from the community of Araraquara (normative sample) of both sexes will be invited to participate. Demographic information will be collected to characterize the sample. The body composition will be estimated by high-frequency tetrapolar bioimpedance (Biospace, InBody 570) and height using stadiometer (mm). The attention to the body shape and social physical anxiety will be estimated for each sex using the ABS and SPAS, respectively. The face validity will be performed including the elaboration of the Portuguese version of ABS. The psychometric sensitivity of the instruments' items for the sample will be evaluated. The factorial validity will be evaluated using a confirmatory strategy (CFA) with Weighed Least Squares Mean and Variance Adjusted (WLSMV) estimation. The indices used will be the chi-square by the degrees of freedom ratio (Ç2/df), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). The convergent validity will be evaluated from the average variance extracted (AVE). The invariance of the factorial model will be tested using multigroup analysis (Ç2). The reliability will be estimated using the composite reliability (CR) and alpha ordinal coefficient (±). A structural equation model will be elaborated seeking to answer the third aim of this study. The structural model will be analyzed in two steps. In step 1, the fit of the model will be evaluated using the Ç2/df, CFI, TLI, and RMSEA.
