Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a pulmonary and systemic disease that makes the individual with a higher degree of hypoxemia during the sleep period than when in waking or exercising, and most of them have reduced sleep quality , regardless of the severity of airflow limitation, but possibly dependent on the presence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).Objectives: To evaluate the concurrent validity of PSQI in inferring a higher risk for the development of OSAS, relating it to AHI, as well as the criterion validity and reliability of the PSQI, determining a cut-off point to identify greater or lesser risk for OSAS in individuals with COPD.Materials and Methods: In the first stage, volunteers, starting at age 50, will perform an initial clinical evaluation. Afterwards, they will follow the second stage, with the pulmonary function test (spirometry) for diagnostic confirmation and staging of the disease (COPD), as well as the third stage, with the home sleep exam, also for diagnostic confirmation and staging of the disease (OSAS). Finally, at the end of the proposed activities, the quality of life index questionnaire (PSQI) will be applied, given a one-week interval between the first and second applications.Expected results: It is expected that it is possible to verify the validity and reliability of the PSQI questionnaire for the COPD population, emphasizing the importance of sleep quality assessment in these individuals and possible risks for OSAS development.
