Abstract Mangoes and avocados are broadly produced in Brazil and even been classified as tropical/subtropical fruit, they are susceptible to physiological disorders and sunscald caused by the exposition to solar radiation is one of the problems that can affect fruit quality. Sunscald is commonly controlled via spraying the fruit with calcium hydroxide, however this practice is not always efficient. Marine organisms produce organic compounds, such as mycosporine like aminoacids (MAA) that protect them against the UV-A and UV-B radiation. MAA have been already incorporated to sunscreen for human beings, however it was not found applications aiming to control sunscald in fruit. Therefore, the main objective of this research project is to develop a coating containing MAA to be use in pre-harvest of mango and avocado fruit and as specific objectives: I. study the photoprotective characteristics of this coating, II. compare the efficiency of this coating with calcium hydroxide spray, III. evaluate the quality and determine the modifications of biomarkers of fruit submitted to these treatments.
