Abstract This project aims to analyze the travel narratives about Brazil and Chile by the English author Maria Graham and by the Austrian writer Ida Pfeiffer, focusing on how the authors represent Brazil's and Chile's histories and cultures, especially regarding their perceptions about slavery, local women and the colonial relations between these South-American countries and Europe. Their travel accounts were written in the first decades of the nineteenth century, since Graham stayed in Brazil and Chile between 1821 and 1823 and Pfeiffer visited both countries in 1846. This research project also proposes to reflect on Graham's and Pfeiffer's works in the light of gender theory in travel writing and within a greater context pertaining to British and Austrian colonial relations and Enlightenment thought in the British and German tradition. Thus, I shall reflect on the colonial practices that emerge in their descriptions of Brazil and Chile and on how these accounts form European subjectivities in the metropolis. To do so, I will work with Graham's Journal of a Voyage to Brazil and Journal of a Residence in Chile and with Pfeiffer's Eine Frau fährt um die Welt (A Woman Travels Around the World). (AU) | |
