Abstract

The present study aims to analyses critically some concepts brought forward by Peter Bürger in his Theory of the Avant-garde. The main focus will be on how the concepts of art as an institution, artistic means, the stage of self-criticism of art, shrinkage of experience collaborate to the discussion of the autonomy of art It will then be investigated, through the aforementioned concepts, the common points and the opposing views in Hal Foster and Renato Poggioli's thought. Those are two other authors who have extensively examined the avant-garde movements. It will be observed how Poggioli, before Bürger and Foster, in opposition to him discuss the matter of the autonomy of art in relation to the avant-garde.
