Abstract

Despite the growth of women's relative employment rates, many of them still face difficulties in accessing promising jobs. However, briefly analyzing Brazilian's labor market, it is possible to notice that, during the 2000s, there was a decrease of occupational segregation by gender. In the same period, the Brazilian productive sector was affected by the accentuation of trade with China. Therefore, this article will explore the gender specificities between and within sectors in order to verify whether the increase in domestic competition, caused by the expansion of Chinese participation on international trade (or China shock) has resulted in a reduction on occupational segregation between men and women in Brazil, during the years 1995 to 2013. Thus, the study is based on an empirical analysis using a panel data structure, through data from the Brazilian formal labor market (RAIS) and information about the trade flows between Brazil and China (BACI database).
