Abstract

This research project aims to do a survey concerning the first slums that emerge at São Paulo after the age of 1940, until the end of 1960, when they seem to be inescapable and part of the urban landscape. Using some sparse mentions in the bibliography - the biggest part of them tend to associate the slums to the 70's-; some reports made by the municipality's social assistants; documents made by the Movimento Universitário de Desfavelamento (MUD) associated to the University of São Paulo; a cartographic survey able to indicate their location in the city; and a research in some contemporary papers; the research intends to map the emergence and extinction - or consolidation - of the first São Paulo's slums, relating this phenomenon to the modernization process, contributing to historicizing different ways of seeing the construction of São Paulo's metropolis.
