Abstract

In recent years osteoporosis has attracted the attention of researchers and public health services due to its high treatment costs for society in general. However, the period of childhood and adolescence is considered as primordial, especially for bone mass gains. In this sense, the literature also discusses what are the effects of muscle and adipose tissue on bone mineral density of children and adolescents. Objective: To analyze the effect of muscle mass and adipose tissue on adaptations in lower limb bone structure of adolescents engaged in different sports and to identify whether the possible osteogenic effects of muscle mass on lower limb density, geometry and bone remodeling parameters are mediated by fat tissue. Methods: Longitudinal study with 24 months of follow-up (collections will be performed in three moments, considering a period of 12 months for each data collection) that will be conducted in the city of Presidente Prudente. The sample will consist of the least 197 youths classified as: control (not engaged in organized sports activities); sport with lower mechanical impact (swimming) and sports with greater mechanical impact (athletics, basketball, karate, kung fu, judo, tennis, baseball , artistic gymnastics and ballet). Bone density (BMD [g/cm2]) and content (BMC [g]) parameters will be measured by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) technique (General Electrics model WH - Prodigy Primo). Will be treated as confounding variables: chronological age, biological maturation and consumption of vitamin D and GH growth hormone. Expected outcomes: Finally, it is expected to more precisely discriminate the actual impact of muscle mass and adipose tissue on bone gains in adolescents, as well as the role of practicing different sports in such a process.
