Abstract

The following work will mark the principal alterations occurred in the ways of comprehend the care of the self, developed by Foucault, between its establishment as philosophical thematic by Alcibiades of Plato and the care of the self that goes back until the first centuries before Crist. In order to do this, we will show the ways the care of the self emerges in the platonic philosophy conditioned for three limitations. 1) Who must occupy with itself is the young aristocrat who wants to acquire power. This implies in relation between the care of the self and the status. 2) The objective of the care of the self as the government of the others and 3) the form of care of the self as the knowledge of the self. These three elements of the epimélei beatou in the platonic philosophy will be abandon in the period that extend the establishment of roman stoicism until the classic Hellenistic culture reborn that precedes the Christian pastoral. In this period, the care of the self became a universal imperative indifferent to the status. The objective of the care of the self is no more the city but became the "I" and the care of the self actives will be dietetic. Taking in consideration that these three elements (the status, the objective and the form) are altering through in the first centuries of our era, we will show how the care of the self transforms itself in a practical autonomy, self-finished and plural in all it form in a way that are all related to distinct ways of comprehend the culture of the self related to this three movement of the care of the self that Foucault localize in Alcebíades.
