Abstract

The objective of this project is to investigate the ergogenic effects of trehalose supplementation throughout prolonged cycling in trained cyclists. Acting as controls, we will use a conventional placebo (sweetener), maltodextrin (carbohydrate with high glycaemic index) and isomaltose (carbohydrate with low glycaemic index), these two being considered as positive controls. Our hypothesis is that supplementation of trehalose will have equivalent effects or greater than supplementation of maltodextrin and isomaltose, with all three carbohydrates more efficient than the placebo for performance. Twelve male cyclists between 18 and 40 years, with previous experience in cycling will be recruited to take part in this project. The study will have a cross-over, counterbalanced, double-blind design and controlled by placebo. There will be four conditions as follows: (a) Placebo (b) Maltodextrin (c) Isomaltose and (d) Trehalose. The latin square techinique will determine the sequence of the tests. The supplements will be ingested during the physical activity, ingesting 200 ml each 20 min throughout. The exercise test will be performed on a cycle ergometer and will comprise of 120 min cycling 100 min of intermittent exercise followed by a 20 min time-trial test. Performance will be evaluated as the total work produced (kJ) and the total distance covered (km) during the time-trial. Blood tests will be taken every 20 min during the exercise for blood glucose, nitrate and nitrite. Muscular biopsies will be realized before and immediately after each session, and subsequently analysed for muscle glycogen. (AU)
