Abstract

This proposal aims to investigate the applications of cold plasma at atmospheric pressure (Low Temperature Atmospheric Pressure Plasma - LTAPP) in Dentistry. The general objective is to develop protocols for the application of plasma and plasma activated liquid in vivo and ex vivo for diseases of dental interest and portable equipment for clinical application. As specific objectives it is intended to develop effective protocols for the following conditions of dental interest: oral candidiasis, periodontitis, dental caries, endodontic infection and oral mucositis. Protocols for direct application of plasma or plasma-treated liquid (LTP, indirect application) will be used. In the case of infectious diseases, the effective LTAPP parameters for each specific pathogenic biofilm will initially be standardized in vitro. Subsequently, these parameters will be evaluated for cyto and genotoxicity, adopting the most appropriate cell line for each case. The effective (maximum antimicrobial effect) and safe (less toxicity) protocols will be applied in in vivo or ex vivo models for validation. Regarding mucositis, protocols using direct or indirect application will be evaluated in rats treated with 5-fluorouracil, followed by histological and immunohistochemical analyzes. The systemic toxicity of LTP will be evaluated in a model of Drosophila melanogaster. The plasma generating equipment used for this study was developed and validated by the project team, with several associated publications. The current equipment is laboratory bench sized. Thus, it is also the objective of this project to transpose the current equipment into a small and portable prototype, maintaining its potential. (AU)
