Influence of sleep quality and time on soccer passing performance

Abstract

The pass is a skill used in most team sports. Passing errors can hamper in a short-to-long term the competitive performance (e.g. match result and tournament ranking, respectively). It is known that oscillations in sleep are one of the factors that can directly impact athletic recovery experienced at night period. Low recovery rates may directly affect the game technical indicators in the sport. However, the effects of sleep on skill-related performance required in football are still unknown. Thus, the present study aims to verify the influence of quality and time of sleep on the passing performance of soccer players. Twenty field soccer players (18-25 years old) will be assessed using a previously validated test (Loughborough Soccer Passing Test - LSPT). The protocol will be fully monitored by digital video cameras (120 Hz) to compute the total time to complete LSPT, accuracy of passes and speeds of the foot and ball. During the 24 hours preceding the LSPT field protocol, the activities of the participants will be monitored by wrist actigraphy making it possible to measure quantity indicators (time they lay down, got out of bed, total time in bed and total time sleeping) and quality of sleep (total time awake after sleep onset, sleep latency and efficiency). Pearson's correlation tests will be performed between the measures of quality/time of sleep and the performance in the LSPT, with a level of statistical significance adjusted to p < 0.05 (95%). The results of this study may inform coaches about the role of sleep in technical performance in football, as well as assist in establishing sleep hygiene strategies for players.
