Abstract

This doctoral project seeks to investigate the relations between history, city and cinema from the standpoint of four feature films of the Brazilian movie maker Adirley Queirós (Ceilândia-FD): Is it only one city? (A cidade é uma só?) (2011); Whites leave Blacks stay (Branco sai preto fica) (2014); Once upon a time Brasilia (Era uma vez Brasília) (2017); and Dry woods in flames (Mato seco em chamas) (work in progress). Our hypothesis is that the films of this author are ways for thinking of the caesuras of Brasilia and of the movement of subaltern subjects between the monument-city and its extensive periphery. In this endeavour, we intend to develop an approach for film analysis which is capable of highlighting simultaneously the formal characteristics of the work and the thematic or critical aspects of social life which it brings to light. For this purpose, the present experiment combines concepts and methods of anthropology of performance, visual anthropology and cinema theory and criticism. (AU)
