Acoustically controlled auditory training: examination of its effectiveness through the combined use of behavioural evaluation and self perception questionnaires

Abstract

Auditory Training (AT) is one of the indicated procedures for individuals diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD). In scholastics it is fundamental that activities are motivational and intriguing. Self perception questionnaires are important for the qualitative evaluation of the post Auditory Training results. Objective: Analyze the effect of the acoustically controlled Auditory Training in children diagnosed with CAPD, through the combined use of pre and post AT self perception questionnaires and the Behavioral Reevaluation of the Auditory Processing. Methods and Materials: Descriptive study, comparative and of transversal character. Children ranging from 8 to 10 years of age, having been diagnosed with CAPD and indicated for the ACAT, will be invited to participate in the research. Following the completion of the AT, a Behavioral Reevaluation of the Auditory Processing will be performed by the speech therapists in the institution's evaluation service. The AT will be performed in person through the use of an online platform, consequently being developed with exercises from the "Afinando o Cérebro" website, throughout eight weekly sessions. The questionnaire that will be in use throughout the study is part of a new online triage battery from PAC, labeled AudBility. This questionnaire will be applied in two distinct moments (Q1 - pre AT and Q2 - post AT) with the purpose of evaluating how the child recognizes his/her auditory performance in several situations before and after the AT. The results will be statistically analyzed by professionals of the area in study and displayed in comparative graphs for presentation. It is expected that the following research contributes to a more integral understanding of the effects of the acoustically controlled auditory training in children diagnosed with CAPD.
