Validation study of the Brazilian version of the Muscularity-Oriented Eating Test (MOET) in young adults of both sexes

Abstract

The behaviors oriented to muscularity gain seem to be much more frequent in males and, to a lesser extent, also among females, as previously imagined. However, the instruments developed to assess eating disorders were not suitable for accessing disordered eating behavior aimed at gaining muscle and reducing body fat. Thus, the Muscularity-Oriented Eating Test (MOET) was designed to assess eating attitudes and behaviors associated with the pursuit of muscularity, which can be precursors to eating disorders and lead to serious biopsychosocial complications. The present study aims to test the psychometric qualities of the MOET translated into Brazilian Portuguese in young adults of both sexes. To this end, the instrument's factor structure, temporal stability and internal consistency will be evaluated, in addition to convergent validity. Nine-hundred adults will participate in the study, 450 men and 450 women, between 18 and 40 years old. The test-retest analysis will be performed with 100 participants with the same characteristics. The data collection will be carried out virtually, through the SurveyMonkey platform and the invitation will be made by direct mail (email) and social networks. The data analysis will include exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, intraclass correlation test, McDonald's omega and Pearson or Spearman correlation test.
