Abstract

The Atlantic Forest in one of the hotspots for biodiversity conservation, and is characterized by extensive landscapes and degraded natural fragments. Efforts and financial resources for the conservation of natural remnants and the restoration of degraded areas are necessary. In this sense, the main objective is to investigate the motivations and factors that led small, medium and large rural owners to make the decision to suppress, conserve and/or restore (actively or passively) the native vegetation of their rural properties in the past 30 years, and whether they have knowledge of the Ecosystem Services (SE) that these forests can or could provide. The study area will cover 90 rural properties located in fifteen municipalities in the state of São Paulo, with different trends in the coverage of native vegetation between 1985 and 2015: increase, maintenance or reduction. Data collection will be done through a structured questionnaire applied with the landowners. The interview script will address: i) social characteristics of the rural owner and his family; ii) characteristics of the property and the production system used; iii) motivations and factors for the owners to make the decision to degrade, conserve and/or restore the cover of native forest vegetation; iv) perception of rural landowners regarding the benefits and/or harms of this vegetation on their properties. The data will be analyzed quantitatively, with the support of the program R. It is expected to contribute to the definition of good policies for the conservation and restoration of native vegetation within the rural property in São Paulo. (AU)
