Abstract

This study aims to: 1. formulation of new materials containing nanometric beta-tricalcium phosphate (Beta-TCP) particles functionalized with fluoride or fluoride plus stannous; 2. to assess the effectiveness of these materials in reducing dental permeability and erosive dentin wear. The study will be divided into two phases. In the first, a gel and a varnish containing the nanoparticles will be formulated and these will be characterized by analyzing the release of calcium, phosphorus and fluoride. For comparison, a commercial fluoride gel and varnish, and placebo gel and varnish will be used. A group without treatments will be also included. In the second phase, the ability of the materials to promote dentin tubule occlusion, reduce its permeability and decrease surface loss will be determined after treatment and after an abrasive/erosive cycle. Human dentin specimens (n = 12), will be immersed for 5min in 17.5% EDTA solution for a simulated hypersensitive dentin, receive the treatments and will be submitted to 5 days of erosion-abrasion cycle (5min in a 0.3 % citric acid solution, followed by 60 min immersion in artificial saliva, 4x/day; 30 min after the first and the fourth erosive challenge, and then toothbrushing with a suspension of a standard toothpaste, 1450 ppm F-, as NaF, will be done for 15s, with 2min of exposure to the suspension).
