Abstract

Between the XIV and XV centuries, in the European Christian kingdoms, the production of pastoral works written in vernacular language has become increasingly recurrent. They were intended to propose models of behavior and prescriptions regarding ways of contact with the sacred and the absolution of sins. In the kingdom of Portugal, such councils and building models sometimes refer to painful experiences of redemption from sins, that is, to the continuous effort to repair the negative consequences of sin committed against God and against others. The prescriptions referring to these satisfaction practices proposed that reparation for the sin committed could be achieved by reversing the flawed act and by gestures and ardent expressions - visible manifestations of regret. This research aims to investigate, in a period when the theme of confession has become one of the main objects of theological and pastoral literature - the result of the institutionalization of auricular confession -, the ways of reparation of the evil, or satisfaction, accepted and stimulated among the society of the late XIV and XV centuries. From this survey, the different situations or circumstances in which these practices of satisfaction were recommended for the improvement of the soul and social order will be examined, in order to understand the moral foundations accepted and established at that time.
