Does the clinical evaluation of restorations on permanent teeth with bioactive materials show a greater success than restorations with non-bioactive materials? A systematic review

Abstract

The high complexity of the oral cavity c constantly challenges every material that is placed in this environment, which ends up contributing directly to the limitation of restorative treatments' longevity. It is believed that the properties presented by bioactive materials can reduce such disadvantages by making them able to interact with this hostile environment and with the remaining dental tissues beneficially, through the promotion of an active biological process. But, because the bioactive materials class is still relatively new in dentistry there is no consensus regarding its clinical performance. This Systematic Review was proposed with the aim to assess whether restorations performed in permanent teeth with bioactive materials show greater clinical success than the ones with non-bioactive materials. It will be done by tracing a search strategy In the following databases: Pubmed (MedLine), Scopus, Web of Science, American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database (LILACS), Brazilian Library in Dentistry (BBO), Embase, The Cochrane Library, and the gray literature. The collection and analysis of all the material will be made by two independent reviewers who will first select, from the totality obtained by the search strategy, potentially useful studies by reading their title and summary. Studies that meet the inclusion criteria of the previous stage will be subsequently qualified according to their methodological quality through the assessment of their risk of bias. A narrative synthesis will then be carried out based on the data obtained by the studies that present the best methodological quality. Lastly, the heterogeneity of the extracted data will be analyzed and, if possible, a meta-analysis will be conducted. (AU)
