Abstract

Brucellosis is considered the main cause involved in canine reproductive disturbs, leading to late abortions, epididymis, and prostate involvement, which may progress to infertility. In addition, the disease presents a significant socioeconomic impact due to the reduction in animal productivity, exemplified by the loss of breeders, abortions, infertility, and late growth of puppies, as well as its zoonotic effects, as the dog has been neglected for a long time as a source of infection for humans. Brucella Canis species is the most important in canids from the epidemiological point of view, but Brucella melitensis, Brucella suis, and Brucella abortus can cause occasional infections. Epidemiological data in Brazil about canine brucellosis reveal distinct realities, demonstrating the need for new studies for better characterization of this infection in the national territory. In this way, this study aims to define the prevalence of Brucella Canis and its relationship with the symptoms presented by animals treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, UNESP Botucatu.
