Abstract

Several new instruments have been or are being built with the main goal of identifying potentially hazardous inner solar bodies. The main examples are Pan-STARRS and LSST - the latter will enhance the number of known small bodies by at least one order of magnitude. S-PLUS, the first Brazilian-led survey of the southern sky, in 12 bands, funded mostly by FAPESP, can also give an effective contribution in this direction. The number of Solar System small body discoveries is set to grow significantly with the analysis of S-PLUS data. Only in the first data release of the survey, DR1, with 336 square degrees, given preliminary analysis, we estimate the detection of 10000 asteroids. This project aims to fund a 6-month BEPE of the pos-doc Fabio Herpich at the U. of Washington, in Seattle, to work with Dr. Mario Juric, the Project Scientist for Data Management of the LSST project, to apply the same code that was written for detection of minor bodies of the Solar System in LSST onto the S-PLUS data. Fabio Herpich was hired in the S-PLUS project specifically to deal with time-domain science. His main project is to detect and characterize variable stars - in line with the proposed project, of detecting and characterizing asteroids. (AU)
