Abstract

Orthopedic conditions that require specialized surgical procedures for bone tissue replacement are frequent in both veterinary and human medicine. Therefore, it is not uncommon for surgeons to face long bone fractures, bone neoplasms or fracture non-unions, which require reparative surgical treatment with the use of bone substitutes. The aim of this research is to develop alumina scaffolds containing 5% zirconia (S-Al2O3/ZrO2) coated with calcium phosphate for twenty-one days (21d) and analyze them by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), stereomicroscopy and cytotoxicity assay. It is expected that S-Al2O3/ZrO2 (21d) have potential for clinical application and can be used as an alternative in the repair of orthopedic injuries with bone loss, with satisfactory results, low cost, easy acquisition and access, improving the patient's quality of life.
