Abstract

This project aims to analyze how Bahian politicians acted in face of economic instability experienced by the province of Bahia in the mid-19th century. The research proposal arose from the development of our master's and doctoral research, taken at the Federal Fluminense University, in which we found evidence that there were initiatives by the political class that sought to solve that problem. These evidences went against the predominant narratives about the economic crisis in Bahia, according to which the politicians from there were inert to it, evidencing a historiographical question to be studied. Through the analysis of sources mainly from the political sphere, such as ministerial and provincial reports, minutes of imperial and provincial parliament, we seek to investigate speeches and the proposals presented by politicians from Bahia regarding its economic instability as well as understand in which degree these discourses and proposals were conditioned by local specificities and modulated by experiences carried out in other regions of Brazil and in other countries.
